Abstract

Este artigo tem como objetivo principal responder à seguinte pergunta: quais as implicações, para o Iraque, da utilização de representações como “Rogue State”, “Outlaw State”, “Sick Nation” feitas pela administração Bush entre os anos de 2000 e 2003? Argumenta-se que não se tratam de simples adjetivações, mas de representações que possibilitaram intervenções militares e a deterioração das já frágeis bases do território iraquiano. Isso porque compreende-se que mesmo que subjetivamente, quando discursos naturalizam certas interpretações (e não outras), a criação do “outro” pode ser utilizada, de maneira potencial, como uma arma política. Para tanto, tem-se como base a perspectiva pós-colonial, a metodologia de representação histórica a partir dos discursos empreendidos por Bush e sua equipe.

ABSTRACT

This article investigates the following question: what are the implications for Iraq of the use of representations such as "Rogue State", "Outlaw State", "Sick Nation” by the Bush administration political discourses between 2000 and 2003? We argue these are not mere adjectives but representations that have enabled the use of military intervention to promote the deterioration of the already fragile bases of Iraqi territory. We claim that discourses naturalize certain interpretations (and not others) by highlighting the difference and “otherness”, which can be potentially used as a political weapon. We develop our argument based on a postcolonial perspective and we use the methodology of historical representation from the discourses undertaken by Bush and his staff.
