Abstract

This article proposes a critical mapping of translations of works by Italian female authors published in Brazil between 1925 and 2025, in order to reflect on the representation of these writers in the Brazilian literary system. The study analyzes historical, political and social aspects — both in Italy and in Brazil — regarding the (in)visibility of translated female authors, as well as the role of literature manuals in the consolidation or marginalization of these female voices. The research is based on data from the Index Translationum, the Dictionary of Literary Translators (DITRA) and the Bibliographic Dictionary of Translated Italian Literature (DBLIT), complemented by surveys of institutional and editorial collections. The results reveal a progressive growth in translations by female authors in Brazil, especially since the 1990s, a period in which there has been an intensification of gender debates in literary criticism and editorial policies, although the number remains lower than that of translations by male authors. The research also articulates with initiatives that propose the construction of alternative and more inclusive canons, highlighting academic and editorial efforts that seek to rescue historically invisible female writers. It is concluded that, although there is still a long way to go to achieve representative equity, it is possible to identify signs of change in the translation scenario and in the recognition of literature by Italian female authors in Brazil, with a critical repositioning of literature by female authors and the concomitant increase in the translation of Italian female authors in Brazil.

Monalisa Cristina Teixeira, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC)

Lecturer of Italian Language in the Department of Foreign Language and Literature at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). PhD candidate in Translation Studies at UFSC with a CAPES scholarship. Holds a Master’s degree in Italian Studies from the Università degli Studi di Bologna (Italy). Winner of the Premio America Giovani per il Talento Universitario in 2022. Graduated in Languages and Literature with an emphasis on Literary and Italian Studies from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), with an academic exchange period at the Università degli Studi di Bologna (Italy).

Andreia Guerini, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC)

Professor at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). She conducts research, teaching, and outreach activities in the field of Languages and Literature, particularly in Translation Studies, Literary Studies, Comparative Studies (Brazilian, Portuguese, and Italian Literatures), and the Reception of Portuguese-language literatures abroad. With CAPES funding, she completed her PhD in Literature at UFSC (1999–2001), was a Visiting Professor at the Università degli Studi di Padova (2009–2010) and at the University of Coimbra (2017–2018). From 2011 to 2022, she served as a visiting professor in the PhD program in Italian Literature, Language History, and Philology at the Università per Stranieri di Siena. In 2024, she was a visiting professor at the Università degli Studi di Perugia. Editor-in-Chief of the Cadernos de Tradução journal (since 2002) and of the journal of the Brazilian National Association of Graduate Studies in Letters and Linguistics (ANPOLL) (since 2017). She was a member of the SciELO Brazil Advisory Committee in the area of Linguistics, Language, and Arts (2019–2021 and 2021–2024). Since 2017, she has served on the External Scientific Advisory Committee of the Center for Humanistic Studies at the University of Minho. She was part of the CAPES committee responsible for drafting the Area Document for Languages and Linguistics (2013). She chaired the National Committee for the CAPES Thesis Award in Languages and Linguistics (2014), participated in the award committee in 2021, and served on the committee for the Grande Prêmio CAPES de Tese Lélia Gonzalez in the Humanities category in 2024.

She was a board member of the Brazilian Association of Translation Researchers (ABRAPT, 2011–2013) and the National Association of Graduate Studies in Letters and Linguistics (ANPOLL, 2014–2016). She coordinated the Graduate Program in Translation Studies at UFSC during the terms 2010–2013, 2013–2016, and 2019–2023. She was on the Editorial Board of UFSC Press (2014–2017), represented the Literature area on ANPOLL’s Advisory Council (2014–2018), and coordinated ANPOLL’s Translation Studies Working Group (2016–2018).

She was awarded funding through CAPES’s Escola de Altos Estudos program and was responsible for bringing several international visiting professors to UFSC through PV/CNPq grants, CNPq Visiting Professor support, PV/CAPES, and the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program. She participated in various national cooperation projects:

PROCAD/PGET/POSLIT/UFMG (2008–2012);
DINTER PGET/UFSC-UFPB/UFCG (2010–2014);
DINTER-CAPES between PGET/UFSC and UFPA (2015–2020);
PROCAD/CAPES-Amazônia between PGET/UFSC, the Graduate Program in Anthropological Studies in the Amazon/UFPA, and the Graduate Program in Human Sciences at the University of the State of Amazonas (2019–2022).

Among international initiatives, she is a member of the UNESCO Chair on Language Policies for Multilingualism (2018–2022 / 2022–2026). She coordinated the CAPES/PrInt/UFSC internationalization project Translation, Tradition and Innovation (2018–2024). Since 2019, she has been a researcher at the Centrum voor Literatuur in Vertaling / Research Centre for Literature in Translation at Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Ghent University (Belgium). Since 2021, she has been a member of the Associazione di Studi Portoghesi e Brasiliani (AISPEB) and the Associação Jacarandá (Genoa). As of 2024, she is editor of the Machado de Assis Journal of Brazilian Literature in Translation, published by the Brazilian National Library.

She is part of the international research project Studies on Chinese-Portuguese Translation and Humanistic and Cultural Exchange between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries: An Interdisciplinary Perspective on Translation and Communication Studies, funded by the Macao Polytechnic University. As of 2024, she is affiliated with the Graduate Program in Translation Studies at UFC and the PhD program in Translation and Paratranslation at the University of Vigo, Spain. Conceived and coordinates, in collaboration with national and international colleagues, the book series Palavra de Tradutor/a, Raízes feministas: mulheres em tradução, Tradutore(a)s e traduções chinese(a)s de literaturas de língua portuguesa, and Literações. Since 2019, she has served as a reviewer for the QS World University Rankings.
