Based on the double concept of “contact” and “conflict”, proposed by Benvenuto Terracini (1951), this article aims to analyze a selection of letters sent, between 1928 and 1953, to Jorge de Lima, by various correspondents from different parts of the world (United States, Peru, Argentina, Uruguay, Spain, France, Hungary) regarding the translation of the Brazilian author’s books. By reading the letters — written in French, Spanish and English —, it is possible to have access to the intense intellectual partnership mantained by Jorge de Lima, throughout his career, especially with authors from Latin American countries. The letters, in fact, provide detailed information about the constant sending of books, articles and poems by Jorge de Lima, and also about the translation, reception and criticism of the Alagoan author’s work in different countries, highlighting aspects of “contact” and “conflict” between languages and cultures.
