Abstract

This paper aims to demonstrate the importance of the linguistic matter in the literature of resistance compared to the Standard English pattern. In the first moment, specific relations of the Black Vernacular English are used in details in order to display the resistance of the theme in Morrison’s writing in comparison to the Standard English pattern. The corpus chosen for this article is Beloved, by Toni Morrison, in which the use of African American Vernacular English dialect, studied by Labov among other scholars, is present. The author circumscribes her writing on the civil rights movement recommended by Martin Luther King. Such linguistic characteristics that permeate Morrison’s text are peculiar to a select group of speakers, perpetuated by the segregation established by the white majority, and for being present at the literary materiality it demonstrates its chronological and sociological nature of resistance.

Possui graduação em Letras Português/Inglês pela Universidade Federal da Grande Dourados (2009), especialização em Tradução de Inglês pela Universidade Gama Filho (2011), Mestrado em Estudos da Tradução pela Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (2013) e Doutorado em Estudos Literários pela Universidade Federal de Uberlândia (2019). Tem experiência na área de Letras e Lingüística, com ênfase em Tradução, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: estudos da tradução, revisão textual, semiótica greimasiana, tradução literária, tradução de humor, tradução numa perspectiva textual, literatura e outras artes (principalmente cinema e teatro) e literatura inglesa, com ênfase em Shakespeare.

Atualmente é professor substituto na UFGD.

Lucilia Teodora Villela de Leitgeb Lourenço, UEMS

Doutorado em Letras (área de concentração em Literatura Comparada) pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (2014). Mestrado em Letras pela Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul (2006). Possui graduação em Ciências Jurídicas e Sociais pela Faculdade de Direito da Alta Paulista, graduação em Letras Português/Inglês pela Unimar - Universidade de Marília, SP (1972). É professora efetiva nivel IV da Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso do Sul, em Dourados.
