Evanildo Bechara is a Full and Emeritus Professor at the Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ) and the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF). For decades, he worked as teacher and professor on postgraduate and improvement courses for university and primary and secondary schools, courses offered by the Liceu Literário Português, where he is Cultural Vice-President, in addition to giving lectures on Education and the Portuguese Language in schools and universities. inside and outside the country. He is a member of the Scientific Committee of the International Association of Lusofonia Colloquiums, as a representative of the Brazilian Academy of Letters; member of the Brazilian National Commission at the International Institute of Portuguese Language (IILP); member of the Brazilian Academy of Philology; Corresponding member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences; Doctor honoris causa from the University of Coimbra; member of the Société de Linguistique Romane; member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters and the Lexicology and Lexicography Committee of the same institution; and the Brazilian representative of the current Spelling Agreement. Recently, in his honor, the Evanildo Bechara Chair was established by the UERJ Institute of Letters, created to promote events on the Portuguese language and linguistic studies in Brazil and other countries.
