Abstract

The aim of this work is to analyse the pertinence of the concepts of “power of the false” and “fabulation”, as elaborated by Gilles Deleuze in his work Cinema 2: The Time-Image, to approach the first part of the documentary Récits d’Ellis Island (Ellis Island revisited: Tales of Vagrancy and Hope) made by Robert Bober and Georges Perec, between 1978 and 1980. The first part of the documentary, entitled Traces, evokes the arrival of about sixteen million emigrants from Europe, between 1892 and 1954. The main purpose of the analysis is to verify to what extent, based on the cinematographic procedures used by the authors, the questioning of the boundaries between truth and fabulation allow us to characterize the documentary as a political film.
