Processos eleitorais na teoria e na prática no século XIX. Dois municípios per¬nambucanos no Brasil de 1880 a 1900
Abstract
O estudo de dois municípios pernambucanos (Bom Jardim e Afogados da Ingazeira), entre 1880 e 1900, revela até que ponto as eleições desempenharam papel essencial na luta pelo poder. O que parece claro é que o poder provincial ou nacional não consegue se impor no nível municipal. Este trabalho, que compreende o período entre o final do Império e o início do regime republicano, destaca as relações entre a teoria e prática nos processos eleitorais, considerando as mediações sociais, como o poder de grupos familiares e a presença do banditismo na esfera do poder local.
