Abstract

We seek to analyze the autobiographical writings of intellectuals who converted to Roman Catholicism, a topic that has been neglected in the recent revival of studies on the genre. Specifically, our aim is to focus on the autobiographical projects of the American monk Thomas Merton (1915-1968) and the Brazilian layman Alceu Amoroso Lima (1893-1983). Merton did publish his autobiography, The Seven Storey Mountain (1948) at the age of 33. Amoroso Lima had a similar project and entitled it A casa azul e outras casas (The Blue House and other houses). But despite mentioning his autobiographical project for decades, he had never finished it. We therefore intend to investigate Merton's reasons for writing such an early autobiography and Amoroso Lima’s choice not to finish his own life story.

Author Biography

Marcelo da Silva Timotheo da Costa, Universidade Salgado de Oliveira

He graduated in History and Economics from the Fluminense Federal University (respectively, in 1987 and 1992). He obtained his master's and doctorate in Social History of Culture from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (1997 and 2002). He was a recent doctoral fellow at the Dept. of History at the Fluminense Federal University (2003-2006) and carried out a postdoctoral internship as a researcher at the Center for Research and Documentation of Contemporary History of Brazil (CPDOC/FGV) between 2006 and 2007. He was, for a brief period, Chief of Staff of the Rectory at the Federal University of ABC (SP). In March 2007, he joined the Graduate Program in History at the Salgado de Oliveira University, in Niterói. He taught, as a guest professor, in the Graduate Program ("lato senso") in Religious Sciences, at Faculdade São Bento do Rio de Janeiro (2008). In 2015, he was a Visiting Fellow at the Center for World Catholicism and Intercultural Theology, at DePaul University, in Chicago. Author, among other texts, of the
