O objeto desse artigo são as relações entre a Escola Normal e a cidade de Belém entre 1890 e 1920 durante um forte processo de modernização. Quais os tipos de confronto e negociação entre seu currículo e regulamento, espelhando um ideal de vida civilizado e disciplinado com seus diversos sujeitos como funcionários, alunos e professores? Que tipo de relações a escola é obrigada a ter com outras esferas governamentais para defender seus interesses corporativos?
