ABSTRACT
This article seeks to discuss what classic authors of Brazilian Marxism such as Francisco Weffort and Octavio Ianni have called “Brazilian populism” in light of Ernesto Laclau's definition of populism. We argue that the debate between the works, tributaries of functionalist sociology, of brazilian marxists (such as those of Weffort and Ianni) and those aligned with the laborist tradition (like Angela de Castro Gomes') known as "trabalhismo" can be enriched by laclaunian theory, which allows placing those proposals at different analytical, or even epistemological, levels.
Keywords: populism, democracy, Ernesto Laclau.
