Affective Atmospheres in Human Geography: Between Non-Representational Geographies and Emotional Cyberspaces (Abstract).
In this work, we explore the intersection of affective atmospheres with spatial practices in both physical and digital environments. Recognizing human geography as a field that studies the spatial relationships and practices that shape the world and place, the text delves into how non-representational geographies, which emphasize experiences and practices beyond symbolic representations of space, offer a valuable framework for understanding affective atmospheres. We argue that affective atmospheres, defined as the emotional qualities that emanate from and shape spaces, are fundamental to human experience. We discuss how these atmospheres are perceptible not only in factual environments, such as cities, natural landscapes, and meeting places, but also in cyberspaces, understood as electronic environments where human interactions occur through digital technologies. Within the realm of non-representational geographies, we highlight the importance of affects and emotions in the production and experience of space, suggesting that physical spaces and cyberspaces are not merely neutral contexts, but active participants in shaping human experiences. We also examine, through various examples, the mechanics of designing and staging atmospheres, showing that it can work as a double-edged sword. Finally, we call for greater integration of emotional stakes in the study of human geography, arguing that understanding affective atmospheres is essential for addressing issues related to identity, the sense of belonging, the role of art, and power dynamics in both physical and digital spaces.
