A escala de silhuetas de Stunkard é um instrumento que vem sendo utilizado para identificar a autopercepção e o grau de satisfação corporal dos sujeitos em relação a sua imagem corporal e como um auxílio para ajudar a perceber o surgimento de doenças como a anorexia nervosa ou transtornos psiquiátricos. Nesse contexto, o presente estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a autopercepção da imagem corporal de idosas que residem em uma instituição de longa permanência (ILPI) de Porto Alegre-RS, através do uso de tal escala, além de identificar se existe relação entre o grau de satisfação corporal com o tempo de permanência na ILPI. É um estudo observacional transversal, com amostra não probabilística por conveniência. Participaram da pesquisa 53 idosas. Em relação aos resultados, 49,1% das mulheres demonstraram satisfação corporal; 35,8%, insatisfação corporal com desejo de reduzir o peso; e 15,1%, desejo de aumentar o peso. Em relação ao tempo de permanência, através do teste de qui-quadrado e o teste exato de Fischer, não foi encontrada relação estatisticamente significativa (p<0,05). Conclui-se que as idosas apresentaram um grau de insatisfação corporal que poderia estar relacionado tanto com uma preocupação com a aparência quanto representar um sintoma de uma doença como os transtornos alimentares ou patologias psiquiátricas.

ABSTRACT

Stunkard’s profiles scale is an instrument that has been used to identify the self-perception and body satisfaction of the subjects regarding their body image and as an aid to help understand the emergence of diseases such as anorexia nervosa or psychiatric disorders. In this context, this study aimed to assess self-perception of body image of elderly residing in a long stay institution (LSI) in Porto Alegre-RS through the use of this scale, and identify whether a relationship exists between the degree of satisfaction with the body length of stay in a LSI. It is an observational cross-sectional study with a non-randomized probabilistic sample. The participants were 53 elderly women. Regarding the results, 49.1% of women showed body satisfaction; 35.8%, body dissatisfaction with the desire to reduce weight; and 15.1%, a desire to increase the weight. In relation to the time spent, the chi-square and Fisher exact test did not find statistically significant results (p <0.05). We conclude that the elderly showed a degree of body dissatisfaction that could be related both to a concern with appearance and represent a symptom of a disease such as eating disorders or psychiatric diseases.
