The valorized designer

Abstract

This paper maps out a number of the different models of the designer that have existed or currently exist, concluding that we need to develop a new model for the millennium: the ‘valorized designer’. The current models it attacks include: 1) the formalized designer; 2) the theorized designer; 3) the politicized designer; 4) the consumerized designer; 5) the technologized designer. The valorized designer model acknowledges the diversity of design and its values, as well as the changing role of the designer whilst arguing that the change is neither simple nor linear. It acknowledges the changing relationship between theory and practice and the growth of interdisciplinarity. For the new millennium, we must educate designers who are as articulate and intelligent as they are visually creative – it is no longer an either/or option or mentality. Whatever their type of design or personal/political/social position, designers need to be aware of values and their implications. Such knowledge and understanding will not only inform their design solutions and methods, but their sensibilities and attitudes as members of society.
