Abstract

In cinematic works of fiction, production design is responsible for crafting diegetic prototypes: objects that perform a fictional technology. Intertwining of design and fiction is also evident in Speculative Design, an approach dedicated to fictional objects and narratives whose main goal is to engage its user – called imaginer – in an exercise of imagination and critical reflection. This paper presents the main research findings, which sought to identify cases of diegetic prototypes in science fiction works of cinema. Through a case study of Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024), an interpretative analysis of their diegetic prototypes was conducted to explore how they manifest in these films, and to assess to what extent they fulfill the purposes of Speculative Design. Main results consist of a toolkit of concepts and taxonomies that work as guidelines for the creation of speculative artefacts.
