Utilitarian issues from the improvised use of products

This article develops a conceptual investigation into the issue of utility, taking an utilitarian phenomenon widely spread in everyday life as its starting point: the improvisations related to everyday practical resolutions, popularly known in Brazil by the word “gambiarras”. Such investigation leads to the contextualization of problems, such as the asynchronies between real demands and needs, and the products and other resources available to solve them, invoking the proposition of terms such as “Utilization Value” and “Utilityness”. Some concepts and references coming from academic and scientific literature, especially the work of Henry Petroski on “useful things”, and Eric Von Hippel on “innovation through utilizers”, are operated with the aim of understanding aspects of usefulness, as well as demystifying prejudices, indicating the importance and potential of utilitarian improvisations as a reference for the development of design theory and practice.
