"JUST LIVE LIFE": visibility, anonymity, and recognition among trans people
Keywords:
lesbian invisibility, anonymity, facial recognition, passing., Trans peopleAbstract
This essay discusses the dichotomy between visibility and invisibility among trans people. The trajectory of A.G., a trans woman who wishes to be invisible and anonymous, served as a starting point for a theoretical discussion that takes up concepts proposed by Nancy Fraser regarding recognition and redistribution. Thus, I argue that when there is no recognition, visibility can be harmful to certain subjects. Demands for visibility by the LGBTI+ movement contrast with the desire of these subjects to remain anonymous, considering that there is no participatory parity. In this sense, anonymity through “passing” can be a strategy for livable lives, as proposed by Judith Butler.
