PRODUCTION AND EXCHANGE OF SEXUAL IMAGES BETWEEN HETEROSEXUAL YOUNG WOMEN: a recipient-based analysis

Abstract

This article analyses the practice of producing and exchanging sexual images, commonly known as sexting, among young heterosexual women. Drawing on a series of individual and group interviews with women aged 18 to
25 living in Mendoza, Argentina, it proposes a typology organized according to the variable of the recipient: sexting in a relationship, sexting with acquaintances and sexting with strangers. In conclusion, some common
features that run through all types of sexting are analyzed, such as the awareness of the dangers of the practice, the masculine insistence on demanding photos and the aesthetic mandates that are put into play when taking photos. These features inevitably requires to consider these new practices in terms of gender issues.
