Abstract

The “Zé Pereira” is a cultural performance that takes place in Itaberaí, in the state of Goiás, in which a group of teenagers wears masks and walks the streets with the sound of the bass drum in the days before Carnaval. For 15 days, the city lives and relives the ritual performance of “Zés”. It is common to hear the sound of the bass drum far away and witness people opening windows and doors, or stepping into the sidewalks, to watch the performance. In this article I approach the understanding of the event as performance, its historical origins focusing on the persona of “Zé Pereira” through the concept of restored behavior developed by Richard Schechner.
