Abstract

Fancy Ball, painted by Rodolpho Chambelland (1879-1967), is one of the highest points in the relationship between visual arts and Carnival, established by Rio de Janeiro artists. But its value goes beyond simple iconography: at the same time synthesis and prefiguration, the painting embodies expression concepts which established themselves in the European art of the nineteenth century, and points to the autonomy of modern painting.
