Abstract

This article aims at reflecting on the samba schools in Recife, having as starting point the field of symbolic struggle related to identity issues in the levels of national and local belonging in the multicultural carnival of Recife. In this sense, this article revolves around the tensions and negotiations raised by the presence of the samba schools in a context which differs widely from Rio de Janeiro, translated into what anthropologist Katarina Real (1990) called the “frevo-samba battle.
