Abstract

After considering, not without a critical approach, the thought of Russian historian Bakhtin, who has contributed decisively for the study of the popular parties, and having as final objective to explain the reason for the fast growth on the number of “blocos” that present themselves in the carnival of Rio de Janeiro, the text discusses the development of the samba schools in the most recent decades. It then highlights the increasing formalization of the samba schools parade, something which has drawn them away from the original carnival spirit in accordance to the bakhtinian parties. Trying to recover such spirit, a great part of the Carioca population has joined the “blocos”, a movement that unquestionably points towards the “rebirth of carnivalization”.
