Abstract

This article aims at recovering a debate over the function of today's opening groups in the samba schools of Rio de Janeiro, which have experienced significant changes between the 1960s and 1980s. It addresses the relationship between the major role played by these groups in the parade whose functions echoes those of the Middle Ages heralds. From this perspective it seeks to understand the processes of memory production, selection and discarding in relation to its function in the context of the current opening groups and the eternal struggle between so-called traditional or modern propositions, justifying continuities and ruptures.
