Abstract

The study focuses on comparing – with important works of Brazilian literature – the complex figure of the “índio de cordão”, a carnivalesque representation of a “bad savage”, which, in thecarnival groups of the turn of the 19 to the 20 century in Rio de Janeiro, generated considerable controversy – and ended up in police stations.
