Abstract

The article discusses garments as a product of the Brazilian popular culture and as mediator of signs and representations,images and imaginary of the context where they are inserted. It is considered that in the popular party the suits express symbolic language that exceeds the functional value of clothes, above all when proposing the construction of personages, signaling cultural values or relations with the body though the ornamentation, costumes and theatralization. In order to do so, the article analyzes some garments of popular festivities, in special of Bumba meu Boi, in its possibilities of plastic, aesthetic and symbolic language.
