Abstract

This text is framed within the history of school subjects within the field of the history of education and seeks to answer two fundamental questions. What is the genesis of school geography in Mozambique? For what purposes was geography introduced into schools? Therefore, studying the history of school geography allows us to understand not only the period in which this subject was introduced into primary and secondary education, but also its function within schools. The period of study is the Estado Novo (New State), between 1926 and 1974. To answer the questions posed here, geography syllabi, three geography textbooks, and official documents consisting of regulations and decrees on teaching from the period under analysis were analyzed. The results demonstrate that school geography was introduced with the establishment of schools during the colonial period in Mozambique, serving the colonial state.
