Abstract

The purpose of this article is to reflect on the conceptual and propositional foundations of Food Security and Food Sovereignty, while also establishing a connection with traditional fishing communities. The methodological approach is qualitative, allowing for an interpretative analysis of data obtained through literature review and bibliographic survey. It is asserted that hunger and food insufficiency have become central issues across various political and representative arenas, where the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has played a key role in engaging global leadership and proposing measures to address this chronic social problem and achieve Food Security. However, the market-driven focus of these proposals has not overcome the persistence of hunger. In this context, traditional peoples and communities worldwide, organized through social movements, have begun advocating for Food Sovereignty as an alternative. It is concluded that, although these peoples experience distinct cultural and geographical realities, the Food Sovereignty proposal shows adaptability to each context and can be integrated into food production practices in aquatic environments.
