Ethno-knowledge or traditional ecological knowledge has been widely discussed on a global scale since the 1980s, aiming at possibility of relating them to scientific knowledge. In a national context, most studies developed reveal a scenario of high potential for application of information, especially for environmental planning and management. There are limitations related to incorporation that go beyond reach of hegemonic interests, linked to access to information, understanding, systematization and possibilities of triangulation. This work aims to show, through a literature review, how local knowledge can be systematized and applied to management of coastal environments. A collection of scientific articles was carried out in national and international academic portals, in Portuguese and English, and a bibliographic review of an analytical nature was carried out. Through the panorama obtained in the texts, it was concluded that, in order to reach information from traditional ecological knowledge, the researcher must exercise an approximation with the group, based on the promotion of dialogue and interaction aimed at the collection and systematization of data in a collaborative way. In summary, the application of this perspective seeks to propose a possibility based on geographical knowledge of combining knowledge in the construction of subsidies for participatory management.
