Abstract

Literature can represent the city by recreating its physical space, functioning as an imaginary mapping (Tally Jr, 2013). These spaces, viewed from an anthropological perspective (Augé, 2013), become settings for individual conflicts and contribute to the construction of identity in the works. Thus, the city in fictional texts allows for reflections on history, culture, and citizenship. In light of this perspective, this study analyzes the literary representation of Luanda in the short story “Vavó Xìxi e seu neto Zeca Santos,” from the book Luuanda (1963), by José Luandino Vieira, and in the work Os da minha rua (2007), by Ondjaki. These texts portray the Angolan capital in different historical periods, linking the characters’ dramas to Angolan identity. The study also discusses how these works can inspire literary-tourism routes, highlighting places that served as settings for the fiction. In this way, literature contributes to cultural valorization and the development of literary tourism, connecting urban space to collective memory and the experience of its inhabitants, offering a reading of the city through fiction.
