Abstract

The translation in question puts into Portuguese the first travel sketch by German geographer Alfred Hettner (1859-1941) about the southern region of Brazil. Despite having been recognized as the great epistemologist of Geographical Science in the first half of the 20th century, Hettner carried out his fieldwork for his doctorate and Habilitationsschrift in South America, when he was able to visit German colonial ventures in the southern region of Brazil. In line with the celebrations of 200 years of German colonization in Brazil, this translation aims not only to make one of the travel reports of the well-known German geographer accessible to the Portuguese-speaking reader, but also to recognize the seminal role that this figure played in Brazilian Geography, inaugurating a Germanic tradition of Brazilian geographical thought, whose greatest exponent was, without a doubt, one of his disciples, the German geographer Leo Waibel.
