Abstract

The 5th edition of the Brazilian Cartographic Olympiad (OBRAC 2023), with the theme "The Amazon on the Map," focused on mapping the natural resources and indigenous peoples of the Amazon using geotechnologies. The event highlighted the importance of the Amazon through maps that explored biodiversity, deforestation, river basins, and social issues. The methodology involved theoretical and practical tests, with participatory and collaborative mapping activities, using platforms like OpenStreetMap (OSM) and tools like uMap, QGIS and Jamboard. Participatory mapping engaged students and communities in creating maps that represented the culture and potential of the Amazon, while collaborative mapping allowed remote participation via the internet, using digital cartographic bases. These methods aimed to empower communities and make their local issues visible, as well as fill cartographic gaps, especially in rural and subnormal areas. The teams produced maps that reflected regional dynamics, highlighting positive aspects and challenges of the Amazon region. During the final in-person stage, the teams visited institutions such as the National Institute for Space Research and CEMADEN. The winning team from the Federal Institute of Pará will develop a junior scientific initiation project on the Carajás Forest in 2024.
