Abstract

Research in the field of environmental justice tends to predominantly focus on marginalized groups. Although of unquestionable relevance, this approach is limited. Considering that directing attention to privileges is relevant for understanding the entirety of mechanisms that produce and reproduce scenarios of environmental injustice, this literature review was conducted with the aim of comprehending the current stage of knowledge regarding how the middle and upper classes access and/or attract, in a privileged manner, environmental protection, resources, and amenities for their living areas. Twenty-seven articles published in English from 2000 to 2023 were reviewed. Searches were conducted on the CAPES Periodicals Portal, primarily returning articles that align with environmental justice literature, political ecology, and/or environmental inequality. Privileged access to various environmental advantages was identified in different countries, along with references to privilege based on race and class. Evidence demonstrates various mechanisms facilitating environmental advantages operating at different scales, historical times, and intensities, reinforcing the need, beyond the promotion of environmental amenities in disadvantaged areas, to combat mechanisms of privileged access to environmental resources that result in negative impacts on other groups of people.
