The increasing levels of environmental degradation, although the advancement of technologies for sustainable development, demand the development of instruments to environmental management assistance, as the economic instrument of Payment for Environmental Services. Observing the Brazilian electric sector, which stands out by the mostly renewable matrix, on the other hand, have a considerable dependence on ecosystem goods and services. In order to discuss how the adoption of PES programs can contribute to improve hydropower generation capacity, this work carries out a bibliographic review on the theoretical aspects of PES and the relationship between hydroelectric generation and Ecosystem Services, to discuss the relevance of water PES from the perspective of energy efficiency. The survey of preconditions, as well as post-implementation monitoring of hydroelectric Developments and a methodology applied to the assessment of the impacts of PES, as well as the dissemination of data, would potentially bring security and justification for new projects, since these aspects are still bottlenecks for the implementation of PES. Survey studies of existing PES correlated with hydroelectric that exist in the basin can also bring important results for leveraging these systems.
