Abstract

The hydrographic basin of the Apodi-Mossoró river has an important influence on the economic development of the region. Thus, the lack of analysis of the physical space and the inadequate management of land use promote impacts on the environmental system, such as erosion and silting up of the drainage system, among other factors. The present work aims to present, through the mapping, how the different types of land use influence levels of environmental fragility to understand the degradation processes of the hydrographic basin of the Apodi-Mossoró River - RN. Thus, the mapping of fragility becomes an important tool in the identification of areas with fragility levels, providing subsidies for sustainable development in it. In the laboratory works, a shapefile file for the types of soil in the basin, Digital Elevation Model and satellite images will be used. Through the mapping it was possible to evaluate and quantify the fragility levels of the hydrographic basin, so that the predominant level in the basin is of medium fragility, being higher than 50%, followed by high fragility. Vegetation cover in the areas with the greatest declivity was important in mitigating areas with very high and high potential fragility.
