Topoapathy, topophilia and topophobia: emotional openings of place

Places are spatialities enveloped by emotions, attachments and multiple affects that go beyond a purely extensive special dimension. In accordance to this conception, it is possible to structure emotional geographies that interpret the multiple bodily-sensorial relations inherent to the placeness of being-in-the-world. Thus, this essay aims to identify how place emotions and attachments expressed in topophilia, topophobia and topoapathy are correlated to the full spectre of ambivalent affects. In order to do so, it follows a theoretical-methodological problematization founded on Humanistic and Cultural Geography, especially the subfield of Emotional Geography, that is articulated with the phenomenological studies of place and emotions. It considers that the distinct manifestations of place attachments based on topophilic affection, topophobic fear and topoapathic suppression demonstrate the affective dynamism and multiplicities intrinsic to geographical experience. The emotional openings implicate weaving the porosities and polysemy’s of place-making, which expresses the networks of senses and feelings that are enveloped in place’s intersubjective and intercorporal dimensions.
