The article examines the role of diverse successional agroforestry systems in promoting the autonomy of agroecosystems, as opposed to the dependence of conventional agriculture on external inputs and labor. The methodology combined a literature review with data collection from farmers in five agroecosystems in different Brazilian states. Data were collected using an interview script based on the Economic-ecological Analysis Method of Agroecosystems, focusing on the four main factors identified in the literature contributing to the autonomy of agroforestry systems: a) demand for labor; b) specialized knowledge; c) reduction in the use of inputs; and d) production diversification. The results highlight that agroforestry systems represent a promising alternative for achieving agroecosystem autonomy, particularly due to the reduction in dependence on chemical inputs. However, significant challenges are identified, including costs and demand for specialized labor, as well as organization of product distribution. Overcoming these obstacles is essential to maximize the benefits of agroforestry systems and promote their autonomy.
