Amputation prevention in a diabetic elderly patient: a case study in specialized dermatology nursing practice

Abstract

This report details the assistance given to an elderly diabetic patient with an advanced infectious process after 15 days of an injury with a nail in the left sole. He was admitted in a dermatology ward of a University Hospital in Rio de Janeiro with multiple ulcers located in the left shin and foot, having indication of infra-patelar amputation by the medical team of vascular surgery. He was managed by the dermatology medical team, by the ward head nurse, specialized in dermatology, and by residents of nursing. Highlighted is the trust put in the nursing staff, with the medical team postponing and cancelling the surgical procedure. After 90 days, the patient was discharged walking. It showed the importance of the integration between staffs and of specialized nursing in then prevention and treatment of injuries.
