Abstract

SOCIAL THOUGHT OF CARIOCAS ABOUT FEDERAL INTERVENTION

Abstract: In a context of extreme political polarization in the country, many groups took to the streets to demonstrate against the outcome of the 2022 presidential elections. Alleging illegitimacy, these demonstrators demanded that the armed forces intervene in the political scene to ensure that Jair Bolsonaro remains president of Brazil. The aim of the research was to identify the thoughts of the population of Rio de Janeiro about a possible federal intervention, and thereby seek to understand how common sense has appropriated this term. In addition, this study aims to make a connection with the June 2013 protests, highlighting the influence that these events had on the construction of social knowledge. Under the structural approach of the Theory of Social Representations, a free recall questionnaire was used as the research instrument, with the inducing stimulus "Federal Intervention". The data obtained was submitted to prototypical and similarity analysis. 32 terms were identified, 6 of which belonged to the central core of the representation. They are: Dictatorship, Order, Fear, Protest, Censorship and Bolsonaro. From the results of the study, it is clear that the population of Rio has appropriated the concept of "Federal Intervention", linking it above all to the idea of a military intervention. In other words, an abstract and complex concept was transformed into something more concrete and known by common sense.
