Abstract

Abstract: The death of a loved one tends to present itself as an unexpected event for other mourners, and can generate important social and emotional repercussions. Therefore, psychotherapeutic care for the bereaved is important so that they can express their feelings and develop a healthy mourning process. The objective of this research is to present a descriptive study, of the case study type, about a bereaved adult woman attended by a Regular Psychotherapy service in a School Clinic, using the concepts of Psychoanalysis as a theoretical basis. Initially, the patient was experiencing significant psychological distress due to the death of her family, a factor that was interfering with the normal functioning of several areas of her life. With the psychotherapeutic process, she was able to more easily work through the grief she was experiencing, reorganizing her routine and strengthening interpersonal bonds. Freud (1914/1980) points out that removing connections with the lost loved object requires a gradual and slow process, requiring psychological support to facilitate the elaboration of the loss and, thus, enable the celebration of life after mourning.
