Abstract

With the growing increase in the number of aesthetic interventions performed in Brazil, it is evident that the body is gaining increasingly prominent status in our society. Consumerism is present not only in the unrestrained pursuit of acquiring objects and goods but also through our own bodies, which can be altered according to the new trends depicted in the media and on social networks. Through new techniques and technologies developed by biomedicine, modifying the body through surgeries has become an increasingly common practice. This article aims to analyze the influence and role of consumer culture, media, and social networks in the search for body modifications. To achieve this, data on the number of plastic surgeries in Brazil and worldwide were collected, and a discussion was conducted with authors addressing issues related to the body throughout history and in contemporary times. It is concluded that the consumerist culture stemming from capitalism, in addition to social networks and communication media, exerts a strong influence on individuals seeking aesthetic interventions, trivializing this practice and not fostering awareness of the necessity, risks, and possibilities of regret.
