This article aims to present, based on a reading of a novel The Death of Ivan Ilyich (1886), written by Leo Tolstoy, a brief observation of the journey of facing death based on a dialogue with the research of French historian Philipe Ariès (2014). We seek to understand the change in perspective that took the West from a view of death as a natural and intrinsic fact of life, to the inconvenience of mourning, transforming the topic into a taboo, after going through, among others, the stages of fear, denial and shame.
