Abstract

Naukratis was a region located in the Egyptian Delta, founded by different Hellenic peoples in the 7th century BC. Traditional historiography treated Naukratis as the classic model of a Hellenic emporium. However, more recent perspectives indicate that the region may have developed to the point of becoming an effective polis. Through the articulation of textual and archaeological documentation, combined with recent historiographical trends, we aim to analyze the site of Naukratis and seek a definition that helps us understand more precisely the nature of the trading post.
