Human (im)mobility and crisis migration: theoretical framework for the problematic of people’s forced confinement in Colombia

Currently, there is a growing number of research on forced migrations, in other words, on human mobility in contexts of armed conflict and massive violation of human rights. However, there are still few studies on internal mobility, namely the forced internal displacement of people, and on immobility, or the non-movement, amid these same scenarios. In this sense, based on the Colombian problematic, this article aims to analyze the issue of people’s forced confinement, theoretically framing it in the subfield of crisis migration. Thus, through a theoretical analysis and a bibliographical survey of secondary data about the state of the art of the topic under study, it is highlighted the relationship between human forced mobility and immobility in the country. Furthermore, it is foregrounded: (i) how this issue, which emerges in a historical context of humanitarian crisis, is treated in national and international legal systems; (ii) the intersectionality of these affectations of human rights; and (iii) how the “choice” versus “compulsory” dichotomy can be problematized.
