BRICS enlargement: energy transition and Chinese economic diplomacy | Ampliación de los BRICS: Transición Energética y Diplomacia Económica de China

The article analyzes the enlargement of the BRICS in 2023 as part of China's economic diplomacy, contemplating its goal of establishing a leadership for the energy transition. Recently, the BRICS have become a relevant space for global governance towards green development. The entry of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and Iran is in accordance with Xi Jinping's energy foreign policy guidelines. The paper explores the energy transition as the axis of China's strategy and its articulation with the BRICS guidelines. It also analyzes its relations with the new members, including comprehensive strategic partnerships, trade ties and investment initiatives. It is argued that the hierarchy of these partners in Chinese diplomacy is already observed at the bilateral level and that their entry into BRICS promotes, at the same time, the Chinese interest in multilateral energy leadership.
