The final declaration of the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg stands for the announcement of its enlargement. In this sense, the forum maintained the geopolitical, rather than geographical criterion of incorporating countries from the so-called 'Global South'. It cannot be ignored that among its candidates there was a preponderance of countries from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), with the formal invitation to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Arab Republic of Egypt standing out. This expansion occurred in a context marked by systemic competition, the search to impose new narratives, as well as geopolitical and geoeconomics fragmentation. Coinciding, furthermore, with a resignification of the MENA region, coupled with the search for “strategic autonomy” to “limit risks” that the aforementioned Arab countries have deployed in their policy actions abroad. That is why this article seeks to analyze the context of linkage, the factors that explain the entrance of Arab States and the implications that these new memberships have for the forum.
