For international political scientists oriented towards the study of international security, one of the relevant problems has been to investigate the relationship between nuclear weapons and inter-state conflicts. At least three different theoretical approaches to this problem can be identified. Within the framework of the theoretical and empirical debate on this relationship, this study aims to estimate the effect of nuclear weapons on the levels of conflict in inter-state relations conditioned by this type of armament. To this end, this study consists of a descriptive investigation based on the application of the standard difference-in-differences method. The empirical results show evidence in favour of one of the three main theoretical positions on this relationship, focusing the explanation of such patterns on the effects of the nuclear deterrence mechanism.
