Impact of Foreign Aid on Democracy and Neoliberal Reforms in African Countries - The Case of Mozambique (1990-2016)

Abstract

This paper analyzes the relationship between foreign aid and political reforms in African countries, focusing on the case study of Mozambique, from 1990 to 2016. This paper aims to reflect on the influence of foreign aid on the democratization process and good governance. It is argued that foreign aid and political conditionalities have a negative impact on the quality of democracy and good governance in developing countries, in particular Mozambique. it analyzes the conditions under which foreign aid affected the democratic trajectory of Mozambique, from the transition from a socialist system to democracy in the early 1990s until 2016.
