ABSTRACT
Despite its importance to Brazil-Argentina relations, Mercosur’s social role in stabilising regional policies and security in South America is little studied. In this article, I draw on critical security studies and international political sociology to analyse the political role of security and insecurity in the constitution of an environment of stability and cooperation. I do not address security in its traditional sense, but as the creation of a stable environment through daily practices that convey a sense of familiarity to society, bringing it closer to Mercosur. I identify which domestic groups are important agents for incorporating such practices, naturalising the official discourse.
