ABSTRACT
Since the beginning of the third millennium, the options for integration in Latin America have diversified with the formation of new formats for association and regional forums, whose orientations transcend the strictly trade dimension that prevailed in the 1990s. Uruguay has participated in this process in two complementary ways: Latin Americanism and participation in a regional bloc. The argument this article puts forward is that the affirmation of a South American space has bolstered the validity of regionalism as a strategy for international relations.
