Abstract: The association process of Turkey into the EU is one of the longest and most complex processes in the bloc’s history. It has been the one that has spurred more debates. The objective of this article is to identify the main variables related to identity issues, to explain Europe’s resistance to the entrance of this country as a full member. Therefore, a brief theoretical description of the processes of construction of national and regional identities will be done. Then, an analysis of the historical and institutional processes together with the debates about the question of Turkish entrance to the EU will be provided.
