ABSTRACT
With the end of the Cold War, the promotion of democracy became an important part of the international agenda. In South America, this phenomenon had very peculiar contours, because of the regional political polarization experienced in the first decades of the 21st century and the consequent overlap of international organizations that deal with the theme. In this context, OAS and Unasur stood out for their centrality, bringing in their norms and their reactions to political crises both consonances and contrasts.
Keywords: Democracy promotion; OAS; Unasur.
